Authorities announced on Monday, May 18, that a British court has sentenced a truck driver for smuggling $9.4 million worth of cocaine in an underwear and clothing shipment destined for Skims, Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand.
Inside the Rumor
According to the National Crime Agency (NCA), 40-year-old Jakub Jan Konkel drove a truck containing 28 pallets of Skims clothing from the Netherlands. Border officials intercepted him at a port in Essex in September. News of the sentencing comes just as the reality star is facing criticism over a separate six-figure defamation lawsuit.
The Backstory
Reports indicate that Konkel made a stop to pick up 198 pounds of cocaine before heading to the port. His truck had been specially modified to hide the substances, which were wrapped in 2.2-pound packages and concealed within a hidden compartment in the truck’s back doors.
The NCA shared photos of the seized drugs hidden alongside the merchandise in a social media post. Crucially, the agency clarified that while the clothing shipment itself was authentic, the brand had absolutely no connection to the smuggled contraband.
The Sentencing
According to the NCA, Konkel initially denied any knowledge of the illicit cargo. However, he later confessed that he had agreed to transport the drugs in exchange for €4,000. The Chelmsford Crown Court has sentenced Konkel to 13 and a half years in prison.
