No More Counting Taxi Money for Capetonians

The Cape Town taxi industry is gearing up for a massive shift as the Cape Organisation for the Democratic Taxi Association moves ahead with plans to introduce cashless payments in its vehicles.

According to the Daily Voice, this shift will commence on the 1st of June, when passengers will be allowed to use and scan their cards instead of paying with cash. This is a major transition, particularly for a massive tourist hub like Cape Town.

The Challenge of Using Cash

For many Capetonians who rely heavily on public transport, mainly taxis, using cash means having to dig through pockets for coins and passing money down the rows, which can often cause drama. This is a tedious task during peak hours, and it is known to cause numerous disagreements and frustrations among passengers. This rollout will completely change the daily commute routine.

The New Payment System

According to Nceba Enge, the chairperson of CODETA, the new payment system will allow commuters to use cards that must be scanned when boarding taxis. He added that this system aims to improve the safety of commuters, especially those working very early or late shifts.

Moreover, the organization also plans to install CCTV cameras to improve the safety and reliability of the taxis.

What Commuters Think About This Move

While commuters are grateful for the convenience this system will bring, some worry about technical frustrations that could worsen already stressful commutes.

One commuter, Esethu Saliwa, said the system could work well, but taxi operators need to be patient while some passengers familiarize themselves with the technology.

Another commuter, Ayanda Maboyana, was less convinced, stating that he foresees problems when the rollout begins.

This shift is one of the most massive changes the taxi industry has ever seen, proving its commitment to adapting to the latest technologies to change lives.

Do you think this is an innovative move?
