Ticket sales for FIFA World Cup matches in Arlington and other host cities have declined in recent weeks, according to ticket sales data and city officials.
Reports indicate that ticket sales have slowed down primarily due to high prices. Some local business owners operating near the host stadiums have not received bookings as expected, with some claiming that it is simply “business as usual” for them.
According to Robert Lodes of the DFW ticket brokerage firm Metro Ticket, several factors may be contributing to the slowdown, namely economic pressures, international travel logistics, and timing.
The Decline in Ticket Sales
There has been a massive decline in sales over the last 15 days, with ticket prices dropping by 23 percent across all host cities.
For Dallas area matches, ticket sales for Netherlands vs. Japan are down by 12 percent, while England vs. Croatia sales have dropped by 21 percent. Lodes added that many buyers might simply be waiting to purchase their tickets closer to the match dates.
Why Tickets Are Not Selling
โPeople ask, ‘How cheap is it going to be?’ And I say, well, ‘cheap’ is probably not the right word for the World Cup, but there are definitely some good buys to be had right now,โ said Lodes. He also noted that steep ticket prices could be the main reason many fans are losing interest.
Social media users have expressed feelings that the US does not seem enthusiastic about hosting the World Cup this year, while marketing specialists believe the country is not leveraging the tournament enough for PR purposes.
Meanwhile, analysts believe the root cause of the slowdown is FIFAโs lack of transparency during the primary ticketing process. FIFA has released tickets in several waves since the presale began. While some waves were planned, the last three releases since the beginning of April came as a surprise. Furthermore, FIFA intends to continue releasing tickets in small batches right up until the tournament starts.
While analysts continue to speculate on the reasons behind the decline, no one knows the exact cause for certain. For now, many fans are simply gearing up to watch the games via YouTube livestreams.
