CAPE TOWN – American skateboarder Jason Vanporppal is officially on the final stretch of his massive cross continental journey. After 106 days on his skateboard and traveling over 5,500 kilometers across Africa, he is arriving in Cape Town today to wrap up his inspiring mission.
Skating for Uganda
The 26 year old started his journey on February 8 in Kampala, Uganda. Inspired by his close friends and local skaters, Isaac Jojinah and Ephraim Ssekiziyivu, Vanporppal set out to raise $45,000 to build Ugandaโs largest permanent skatepark so local youth can have a safe place to ride.
The trip has been incredibly grueling. Vanporppal pushed through seven countries: Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and South Africa. He faced rough dirt roads, serious visa issues, heavy trucks, and extreme weather. Even when his teammates were forced to head back home due to visa complications at the South African border, he kept pushing forward entirely alone.
A Softer Side of South Africa
Reaching the Cape Town finish line on May 25, Africa Day, makes his arrival deeply symbolic. As he skated through South African towns like Bloemfontein, Beaufort West, and most recently Paarl over the weekend, ordinary communities swarmed the streets to support him. School children lined fences to cheer, families waved flags, and local police gave him safe escorts.
This overwhelming warmth has spotlighted a softer, deeply kind side of South Africa. In a country often filled with heavy news headlines, his journey put a beautiful focus on a nation eager to show generosity, hospitality, and connection to a complete stranger.
The incredible reception along the roads perfectly captures the spirit of Ubuntu, the African belief that we are all bound together.
With nearly $35,000 raised so far, the dream of a safe skatepark for Ugandan youth is almost a reality. His final wheels stop spinning today at the City Bowl Skatepark, but the cross border unity he created will keep rolling.
