Onezwa Mbola Launches “A Food Love Story” in Cape Town

A self-taught cook has officially launched her debut cookbook in Cape Town, receiving an outpouring of love and support. Onezwa Mbola, a 27-year-old home cook, content creator, and former MasterChef South Africa Season 4 contestant, can now add “author” to her titles. Holding her dreams in print, her supporters are eager to try out the cookbook, which officially went on sale following its launch on May 26. Onezwa shared emotional images and videos across her social media channels, capturing the massive turnout and warmth she experienced during the Cape Town leg of her book tour.

More Than Just Recipes

Onezwaโ€™s cookbook is titled A Food Love Story, and the recipes are deeply inspired by her passion for food and the healing it can bring. She wanted the title to clearly communicate a narrative of deep love that goes beyond tastebuds, tapping into memory, storytelling, and heritage.

“I wanted to say this from the bottom of my heart because itโ€™s not just about the food. It is about grief, culture, sustainability, and the love that has carried me through,” Onezwa shared.

The cookbook features over 80 recipes. Among them, a standout dish is her layered spinach lasagna, which was specially selected by her son. According to Onezwa, every recipe tells a specific story that evokes a personal memory.

Overwhelmed by Community Support

The online community showed massive support, with many followers rushing to purchase the new book. The shared visuals show that Cape Town turned out in numbers for the launch. In a video shared on her TikTok account, Onezwa expressed her deep gratitude.

“When I tell you I have not stopped crying since yesterday. I cannot pinpoint the exact emotion that is making me cry right now, I am just overwhelmed with so many emotions. I am so happy, I am so excited, but also I am just in disbelief that this is happening for me, and itโ€™s happening the way that it is. The response and the support that Iโ€™ve gotten from the online community is so bloody insane,” she said.

Rising Above Social Media Drama

This milestone is a major victory for her supporters, who previously rallied behind her during a highly publicized social media controversy involving Nara Smith, an international content creator who produces a similar style of video. Many fans claimed that Smith was copying Onezwa’s concepts without giving credit, while opposing fans alleged the reverse. The dispute led to backlash for Onezwa, with critics leaving negative comments on her pages.

By releasing A Food Love Story, Onezwa solidifies the originality of her craft. While online users note that Smith has also reportedly started working on a cookbook, Onezwa has remained consistent and focused on her unique culinary journey despite the online noise.

A Message of Hope and New Beginnings

Beyond the culinary guide, Onezwa hopes readers will take inspiration from her personal journey.

“My story is about why you shouldnโ€™t be afraid to start over and why you shouldnโ€™t let fear of the unknown hold you back. In a world that prioritizes money over happiness, the best thing you can do is choose yourself and redefine what success feels like to you. Then youโ€™ll find the path that was meant for you, and things will flow. I hope anyone who reads this book realizes that the life they want is within reach,” she says.

A Food Love Story is currently available at retailers including Loot, Exclusive Books, Wordsworth Books, and Sentiments, with prices ranging from R275 to R370.
