Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Daughter Zahara Files to Legally Remove Dad’s Last Name

,

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter is officially changing her name. The 21-year-old filed a petition in the Los Angeles Superior Court on June 4 to remove her father’s surname from her legal name, Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt. According to obtained court documents, she is petitioning to be known simply as Zahara Marley Jolie moving forward. She has scheduled a September 28 court hearing for a judge to rule on the motion. Zahara’s filing dates back to April 28, and it comes just days after her brother, 24-year-old Maddox Jolie, also filed a legal petition to remove his father’s last name.

These legal filings are the latest development following their parents’ highly publicized split a decade ago. Jolie and Pitt separated in 2016 after two years of marriage and over 10 years together as a couple. The breakup was triggered by a widely reported 2016 private flight from France to Los Angeles, during which an altercation allegedly took place between Pitt, Jolie, and some of their children. What followed was one of Hollywood’s most protracted legal battles, encompassing fierce disputes over child custody and the division of their shared assets, most notably their French winery, Château Miraval. After eight years of intense legal gridlock, the former couple’s divorce was finally finalized in December 2024.

Zahara and Maddox are not the only children in the Jolie-Pitt clan to distance themselves from the actor, as a clear pattern has emerged among their six children. The eldest, Maddox, reportedly used only “Jolie” non-legally for years before making it official in court. Their 22-year-old brother, Pax, has also been famously vocal about his strained relationship with his father, having posted a scathing Father’s Day message on a private social media account years prior. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Shiloh famously hired her own lawyer and filed to drop “Pitt” on her 18th birthday. Even the youngest twins, 17-year-old Knox and Vivienne, seem to be following suit; Vivienne recently fueled speculation by listing her name simply as “Vivienne Jolie” in the playbill for the Broadway musical The Outsiders, which she helped produce alongside her mother.

As Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s children grow up, they are choosing to legally drop “Pitt” from their last names. This united front shows that the family is still deeply affected by the parents’ 2016 breakup. Even though sources say Brad is sad about the distance between him and his kids, their actions show they are ready to move forward using only the Jolie name.
