One passenger from a cruise ship struck by a hantavirus outbreak has developed symptoms while being transported to France, according to the French Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu stated that the French national began showing symptoms during a chartered flight from Tenerife to Paris. Consequently, all five individuals evacuated from the MV Hondius were immediately placed in isolation. These citizens were among 90 tourists repatriated on Sunday from the Dutch vessel, which had anchored off the Canary Islands before dawn.
Thus far, three fatalities have occurred; two have been laboratory confirmed as hantavirus. Upon arrival at Le Bourget Airport, officials in personal protective equipment (PPE) met the passengers on the tarmac before transporting them to Bichat Hospital in Paris. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs confirmed that the evacuees will undergo a 72 hour quarantine and a full medical assessment before beginning a 45 day period of self isolation at home.
Meanwhile, fourteen Spanish nationals flown from Tenerife to Madrid are facing mandatory quarantine at a military hospital in the Spanish capital. On Sunday, May 11, 2026, a flight carrying 18 people, including American passengers and one British national residing in the U.S., departed for the United States. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reported that one American passenger has already tested positive for the Andes strain of the virus after showing mild symptoms following their evacuation.
Public concern is mounting, with many questioning if this marks the beginning of a nationwide crisis. Is 2026 becoming the new 2020? Let us know what you think in the comment section.
