Samsung Responds to Dua Lipa: “Explicit Assurance” Received Before Using Her Image

Electronics giant Samsung has stated, “We deny any allegations of intentional misuse,” after Dua Lipaโ€™s legal team announced a lawsuit against the company for using her image without permission.

Lipaโ€™s lawsuit alleges that Samsung featured an image of the Grammy Award-winning star on the packaging of several television models and ignored repeated “cease and desist” demands regarding the infringement of her rights. Furthermore, Dua Lipa claims that Samsung benefited financially from the unauthorized use of her likeness. Fans on social media have even admitted they would purchase a TV specifically because Lipaโ€™s image was on the box, highlighting the power of her brand.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Samsung explained that the image was provided by a content partner who claimed that all necessary permissions had been granted.

“Ms. Lipaโ€™s image was used in 2025 to reflect the content of our third-party partners available on Samsung TVs. It was originally provided by a content partner for our free streaming service, Samsung TV Plus,” the statement read.

The company further clarified that the image was only used after receiving explicit assurance from the partner that permissions were secured, including for use on retail packaging. Based on this assurance, Samsung denies any intentional wrongdoing, adding, “Samsung has great respect for Ms. Lipa and the intellectual property of all artists.”

Documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California reveal that the singer is suing Samsung Electronics America for $15 million.

The court filing states: “Samsung exploited Ms. Lipaโ€™s carefully curated and extremely valuable brand identity to sell televisions by using, without authorization, Ms. Lipaโ€™s copyrighted image on the front of cardboard boxes.”

This case mirrors a previous legal battle involving Brazilian soccer legend Pelรฉ, who sued Samsung for $30 million. Pelรฉ alleged the company used a lookalike in an advertisement after breaking off negotiations to use his actual image in 2013.

Samsung, my dear, you are never beating the allegations.
