Gautrain Takes on Uber and Bolt

The Gautrain is launching its own e-hailing service, which will be integrated directly into its existing mobile app.

The service will be called Gau Express, and customers will be able to use its branded vehicles to travel to various destinations starting in October 2026.

The Process

This new service will offer discounted fares to Gautrain customers and will integrate partnerships with metered cabs and the minibus taxi industry.

According to reports, the service was created to address what CEO Tshepo Kgobe described as a gap in Gautrainโ€™s last mile offering for commuters who cannot afford to wait for scheduled feeder buses. The new e-hailing vehicles will feature Gautrainโ€™s signature gold and blue livery for easy identification. Commuters will be able to pay using conventional payment methods or by drawing down a balance held on their Gautrain cards.

Additionally, the service will not be restricted only to stations; it will allow users to request rides from any location within the province.

“Letโ€™s just say you are in a hurry, you are going to an interview, or you have an engagement that requires you to be there right now. You need a vehicle that is going to leave right now,” said Tshepo Kgobe, the CEO of the Gautrain Management Agency.

“You canโ€™t wait for scheduled trips, and that is a major gap in our last mile services.”

Closing the Safety Gap

Following multiple reports of people going missing while using conventional e-hailing apps, this new service aims to close the safety gap. Commuters frequently worry about their safety when using traditional e-hailing services, particularly during the late hours of the day.
