Artificial intelligence evolves every day, but now it has been used to create a vaccine designed to protect against numerous viruses and prevent future pandemics, according to researchers.
The team at the University of Cambridge says this is the first time a vaccine’s key component was generated using AI and subsequently tested on humans. This vaccine was engineered to work against different types of coronaviruses, including all COVID variants that currently infect animals and have the potential to trigger the next pandemic. While this project is still in its early stages, the team is also working on additional vaccines that could prevent the spread of Ebola and the flu.
Vaccines are created to assist our bodies in fighting infections. However, some viruses change, adapt, or mutate, which is why COVID and flu vaccines must be updated regularly.
“We’re always behind,” said Prof. Jonathan Heeney from the University of Cambridge, adding, “What we’re trying to do is get ahead of the curve.”
By getting ahead of the curve, researchers hope to protect the global population against entirely new outbreaks or pandemics.
How Does the AI-Generated Vaccine Work?
Normally, vaccines are developed using current, existing strains of a virus. However, the University of Cambridge researchers utilized genetic codes from numerous coronaviruses recorded by surveillance programs that monitor potential viral threats.
These genetic codes were analyzed by an AI, which then created a “super-antigen.” This super-antigen trains the immune system to protect humans against an entire family of viruses, even if they mutate or jump from animals to humans. Heeney noted that the creation of this vaccine “was surprising for all of us” and added that “it was amazing what we can do with it for the good of humanity.”
“This is about making vaccines that protect us, not just from today’s viruses, but protect us from what can cause the next outbreak or disease,” Heeney added.
Trials and Findings
A trial involving 39 people was initially conducted to determine if the AI-generated vaccine was safe. A second study of 200 people evaluated how effectively the vaccine could train the immune system. According to a study published by the Journal of Infection, the vaccine’s impact on the immune system was modest.
Saul Faust, who led some of these trials, stated that the AI design has immense potential and is highly exciting. Ultimately, this study demonstrates how AI can be beneficial to humanity. To everyone worried that AI will bring about the end of humanity: it is not all gloomy.
