What started as an ordinary shift at a Kuils River petrol station turned into a heartwarming, life-changing moment when a petrol attendant helped bring a baby boy into the world.
Chevaan Abrahams stepped in to assist a woman who went into labor before she could reach the hospital, capturing the hearts of many South Africans. According to reports, the woman had been experiencing severe labor pains. Although an ambulance had been called, the baby boy had other plans, turning the garage into an unexpected emergency care unit.
By the time Abrahams reached the mother, the birth was already underway.
“The baby’s head was already starting to show,” Abrahams recalled in interviews.
Since he had no formal medical training, he relied entirely on instinct and instructions from others on the scene, supporting the family while emergency services were en route.
This extraordinary moment went viral after being shared on social media by content creator @coolbru_za. The act perfectly embodies the spirit of the well-known Nguni phrase, “umntu ngumntu ngabantu”, meaning a person is a person through other people. It is a philosophy deeply rooted in the foundation of Ubuntu: “I am because we are.”
The Dream of Becoming a Paramedic
What makes this story even more poetic is that Abrahams has always dreamed of becoming a paramedic. On that night, he put that latent passion into practice. When the paramedics finally arrived, they took over and transported the mother and infant to the hospital; both are doing well.
In a beautiful nod to his bravery, the grateful parents gave their baby boy the middle name Chevaan.
To help this courageous young man achieve his lifelong dream, a BackaBuddy crowdfunding campaign has been launched. The campaign page reads:
“That night… he showed exactly the kind of courage, compassion, and instinct that South Africa needs in emergency care.”
The campaign has already raised R57000, proving just how far South Africans are willing to go to help him become a qualified healthcare worker. Moments like this serve as a powerful reminder that even in a chaotic world, profound kindness still exists.
