Remembering Riky Rick: Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month

During Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, we take time to remember a South African icon who died at the age of 34 after battling severe depression and deciding to take his own life.

Riky Rick, whose real name was Rikhado Muziwendlovu Makhado, was a legendary South African rapper, producer, and artist. Raised in KwaMashu, a township in the coastal city of Durban, he achieved immense success, leaving behind a loving family, a brilliant music career, and a legacy of mentoring up-and-coming artists. His story serves as a tragic reminder of how devastating mental health struggles can be and why they must be taken seriously. His passing highlighted the unique mental health challenges facing men in a society that frequently overlooks their emotional well-being.

“He suffered from depression for a while before deciding to take his own life. He was found by friends,” a DJ who worked closely with the musician shared.

Hours before his tragic passing on February 23, 2022, in Johannesburg, Riky Rick left the world with one final, cryptic message on social media. His last words to his fans read:

“I’ll return a stronger man. This land is still my home.”

The rapper was equally famous as a premier fashion icon, affectionately known to his fans as “King Kotini.” He was a monumental figure in South African fashion, celebrated by global luxury brands like Gucci while simultaneously championing eclectic local labels like MaXhosa. He constantly pushed the boundaries of local culture, becoming a regular fixture at international fashion weeks in Milan and Paris.

To bridge his love for style and youth culture, he founded Cotton Fest, a fashion and music festival showcasing South African street style and emerging designers. While the festival eventually concluded its legendary run, it left behind a massive footprint that continues to heavily influence South African streetwear culture today.

In October 2025, the Riky Rick Foundation partnered with Sandton City to launch a mental health awareness initiative titled “Words that Heal.” This campaign stands as a core part of the foundation’s ongoing mission to champion mental wellness, break the silence around male vulnerability, and provide emotional support to those fighting silent battles.

Though Riky Rick is no longer with us, his spirit lives on through the countless young creatives he uplifted and the vital conversations he sparked. He didn’t just leave behind music and fashion; he left a blueprint of kindness, reminding a generation to look out for one another. King Kotini’s legacy remains a comforting reminder that even in our darkest moments, we are never truly alone, and his light continues to guide those searching for healing.
