Professor Anele Mngadi is currently facing online backlash after initially winning the hearts of numerous South Africans.
Prof Mngadi became popular around April when she spoke out about a long legal battle she had with Standard Bank South Africa. She initially claimed that she had been emotionally, physically, and financially abused when Standard Bank allegedly tried to defraud her. The story went viral on TikTok, and later on X and Instagram, where users began reposting her videos. Many Standard Bank customers gained the courage to speak out about how they were also allegedly defrauded by the bank. What caused the story to go viral was that many people related to her situation but lacked legal assistance, so her story resonated with them.
Standard Bank said in a statement: โStandard Bank has noted a series of social media videos published by Dr Anele Mngadi Hammond relating to a historic vehicle finance matter concluded in 2018. The dispute related to a valid and enforceable financing agreement to purchase a Ferrari vehicle. In the videos, Dr Hammond makes serious allegations of impropriety against our institution and further alleges criminal conduct by Standard Bank and its representatives. As a 163-year institution that serves millions of customers, Standard Bank places the highest value on trust, integrity and accountability. Our operations are governed by robust internal controls, regulatory oversight and strict adherence to legal and ethical standards. Standard Bank remains committed to transparent, fair and responsible banking practices. We take our legal and ethical obligations seriously and apply the same rigorous standards to all clients and matters. We will vigorously defend the reputation of the bank and its leadership against malicious falsehoods.โ
The social media backlash
Social media, particularly TikTok, went into a frenzy after she created a video about the ongoing immigration movement in South Africa. A lot of people supported the statements she made about the movement. However, it has been revealed that whenever anyone disagrees with her, they get blocked and receive derogatory messages. โI believe Standard Bank,โ one user commented. Others added that they are unfollowing her on social media and feel they have been misled. Is Prof the real deal, or are people just gullible?
